The e-UCM group participates in the jTELSS 2026 Summer School with a workshop on Multimodal Learning Analytics and Serious Games

Last May, the e-UCM group participated in the 20th edition of the EATEL Summer School on Technology-Enhanced Learning (jTELSS 2026), held from May 16 to 24 in Sunny Beach (Burgas, Bulgaria). This annual event is one of Europe’s leading gatherings for advancing technologies applied to education and training researchers in this field.

As part of the official program, professors Baltasar Fernández Manjón and Antonio Calvo Morata led a workshop titled “Multimodal Learning Analytics for Serious Game Validation in Authentic Educational Settings.” During the session, they shared methodologies and approaches based on the group’s experience to evaluate and validate the effectiveness of educational video games (serious games) when implemented in real classrooms. The workshop focused on how Multimodal Learning Analytics (MLA) enables the collection and cross-referencing of multiple data sources from students during their participation in learning activities using serious games and other digital applications. The workshop presented the tool currently being developed within the research group, which is part of Julio Santilario’s thesis. The tool was presented as an open-source software option to facilitate and simplify data collection, experimental design, and deployment in educational settings.

This experience has not only helped highlight the group’s priority research areas, but has also strengthened ties, sparked discussions about the future of AI and educational technologies, and opened up new avenues for collaboration with the international community of the European Association of Technology-Enhanced Learning (EATEL).
